The new, lightning fast Semi dedicated servers

As you may already know, in SiteGround we’ve always been in pursuit of server tweaks, hacks and optimizations with one primary goal – deliver the fastest possible (and secure at the same time) website loading speed. We know how important it is for a website to load fast,  how frustrating it is having to wait for 15 seconds just to see a header banner image and then 10 more seconds to load the body of the website. And nowadays even search engines like Google take into account website loading speed when it comes to search results.

During the years our system operations team, the brilliant geeks who write all the beautiful system software for SiteGround, has written thousands of lines of code to help us optimize the security and speed of the hosted websites. We’ve revolutionized  how shared hosting industry works with the 1H Software, which by the way provides one of the fastest methods of running PHP nowadays. Since then, all our shared and semi-dedicated servers run and operate with 1H Software and many clients have praised us about the speed with which their websites are delivered.

Yet, we know we could do even more. So, our admin team started the year 2012 with one goal in mind – creating the fastest shared web hosting platform out there. And I think we’re almost there. Here’s in brief what’s cooking for you in our admin kitchen. I’ll be updating this as it goes on throughout the year, but the results I am about to share are already impressive…

The world is going mobile – don’t stay behind

Do you know that feeling when you’re not in front of your computer, but you need to find something online quickly – you thank God for your smart phone. It has everything you need in the palm of your hand. You start browsing on your phone, looking up what you need online. And then the frustration kicks in – even if it is a website that you use every day on your computer, if it is not optimized for mobile devices, opening it up on a smart phone and finding what you need can take ages. Up to the point when you give up – and simply try googling a new site that will give you what you want faster, on time and in a way that you can easily read and interact with on your mobile phone. SiteGround goes SPAM FREE

When I say SPAM, you will most probably think of the annoying unwanted emails INCOMING to your own Inbox, and this is definitely one of the SPAM aspects we have been fighting for a long time and which I am proud we have already minimized very successfully. However, in this post I would like to address another aspect – the OUTGOING SPAM: how it affects you and what is the newest solution we have applied to it.

Since I started dealing with hosting (and probably many years before that), outgoing SPAM has been one of the most troublesome aspects for a hosting company. It might sound strange to you, but the spammers are causing hosting companies (and you, our customers) a lot of troubles, headaches and even migraines. How? I will explain in details below. Why Softaculous became more than Fantastic(o) to us…

Fantastico has been on our servers for a long time now, and it is quite possible that you know and like the smiley face in your cPanel, and have used it to install or update a software on your hosting account. However, we have started to get the impression that the guys behind the auto-installer have become a little spoiled by the fact that many people use Fantastico just because it is integrated in the cPanel and are sometimes a little negligent about the quality of their service. Just a few examples from our experience to back up this statement:

Has your WordPress site been hacked recently?

If you’re using WordPress as your favorite open source blogging platform, chances are pretty high you’ve already heard about the recent security flaw found in the TimThumb plugin fow WP. If you haven’t – you should, cause it’s pretty severe. Here is more info on that:

http://www.websitedefender.com/wordpress-security/timthumb-vulnerability-wordpress-plugins-themes/

The security flaw isn’t a core WordPress vulnerability, so you won’t be vulnerable for just using WordPress. However, the bad news is that a pretty big number of themes out there use the TimThumb plugin in order to operate correctly and therefore TimThumb is included in a lot of WordPress plugins and themes, both free and paid. The result is that there is a good chance you might have the vulnerable TimThumb installed and running on your WordPress even if you don’t really know about it or you don’t care.

A new Malware Protection Service Now Available

We’re excited to announce our new service – HackAlert.  HackAlert is the latest malware detection and early warning system available out there, powered by our partner GlobalSign-one of the longest established Certification Authorities and specialists in SSL security.

Malware is developed and improved every day to compromise PCs and spread viruses, hijack computers or steal personal information.  One of the biggest fears of website owners is for their site to be infected with hidden malicious code and then used as a vehicle to distribute it to the website visitors.  Unless remedied quickly, an infected website will shortly be flagged or blacklisted by search engines like Google for hosting malicious content. When visiting a flagged website, its visitors and potential customers will see worrying warnings about the site potentially harming their computers.  In both cases, you can expect a steady drop in your website traffic, at the least.
