Who updates your WordPress?

basie3

This question is getting quite tricky recently. Now that a native autoupdater is included in the WordPress itself (it is one of the major new features in WordPress 3.7, that was released last week), will you ever again be required to click manually on the upgrade link in the WordPress admin? What will happen with the SiteGround WordPress auto updater? And after all, is it you, is it SiteGround or is it WordPress itself that is going to be responsible for the updates? Well, to answer this question we were once again led by our principle: we make sure that the majority of our customers get the best option by default, but we allow the freedom to anyone to change the setup to whatever suits him/her best.

SiteGround Launches An Enhanced Offer For The European Market

SiteGround web hosting company has recently enhanced its service in order to target better its European users. Last week the company introduced prices in EURO and British Pounds, additional free European domain names and more convenient access to phone support from the territory of the old continent. This is not the first step that SiteGround takes to get closer to markets outside the USA. Last year the company launched its first server location in Europe and a few months later one more in Asia. The special attention to its international customers is now extended with new enhancements targeting the European citizens.

Serious Joomla Vulnerability found but we’ve got you Covered!

security

It is mid-summer now but security issues take no vacation. Actually they find the most inappropriate time to appear and make our lives more interesting, to say the least. On Thursday, 25 July the Joomla! Project announced the availability of Joomla 3.1.4/2.5.13 and many users upgraded their websites because the new releases provide tons of useful new features and bug fixes. One will think: job well done, it is time to hit the beach! But… On Thursday, 01 August, the Joomla! Project surprisingly  announced the immediate availability of Joomla! 3.1.5/2.5.14. Apparently not much time to sip exotic summer cocktails was allowed. The reason for this extremely short period between the two versions was that a critical level security issue was discovered just after the previous release and it had the potential to affect all Joomla! CMS versions. Yes, that’s correct  – we are talking about all the Joomla! sites out there. All versions are affected – 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 2.5 and 3. Sounds scary, right? Not if you’re hosted on SiteGround servers!

WordPress 3.6 “Oscar” is Live and Kicking!

It’s Jazz Friday again. Happy new WordPress release everybody! WordPress 3.6 is live and the list of improvements, new features and bug fixes seems to be endless. Since you may have already looked over the official post at WordPress.org I’ll try to highlight only the most important changes and skip those 700+ fixes and minor UI changes. SiteGround uses WordPress to power up this blog and our knowledge base, and I have already updated both instances without any issues along the way.

The new SiteGround.com is now super fast!

superfast

A lot has been said about our new website design: how it looks, what values it communicates and how it changes our hosting plans structure. However, I would like to turn your attention to another aspect of our new website – its amazing loading speed. During the last year I have worked consistently on implementing a lot of speed-related innovations to our hosting service (multiple server locations, Cloudflare CDN, the SuperCacher). I have also talked about speed optimizations on many events, but mainly in the context of our customers’ websites. Now it is the time that I shed some light on the magic behind our own website´s amazing loading speed.

Our Dedicated Servers just got more awesome!

postheader

As far as the hardware is concerned, our dedicated offer has always been awesome. However, during the last few years we have added so many innovations to our shared hosting that our dedicated servers started to lag behind a little. Some of the options you loved so much, like the data center choice, the Joomla and WordPress Autoupdaters, the CDN service, etc.,  were not available for our dedicated server users.  The good news is that this is no longer  the case!  From now on all innovations implemented by SiteGround will be available for our dedicated server users too.

WP-CLI now coming preinstalled on all SiteGround Servers!

WP-Cli

We’re excited to announce that a new WordPress tool has been added to our servers. WordPress users who love command line will be happy to find WP-CLI pre-installed on all SiteGround accounts.

WP-CLI allows you to do multiple things like updating your WordPress, installing themes and plugins, setting up multiple sites, etc., and all that without using a web browser. To take advantage of the tool you don’t need to install anything yourself. Simply login to your account via SSH, navigate to the folder of your WordPress installation and start typing management commands – it’s that simple!

To learn how to use WP-CLI you can refer to our WP-CLI tutorial. Additionally, you can find a full list of WP-CLI commands on their official website.

SSH can be easily enabled for all SiteGround accounts through your cPanel or Site Tools account. For detailed instructions check our tutorial for  SSH on Site Tools.
