Expert Spotlight: The Team That Shapes SiteGround’s Culture

Expert spotlight with Stanislava and Ramelina

Building a strong team spirit and a genuine sense of belonging is never easy. When SiteGround first started, we were a small but ambitious team with a true startup mindset. But how do you preserve that same closeness when there are more than 550 experts, spread across different countries, teams, and generations? That challenge rests largely on the shoulders of our Events team – the people who craft experiences that bring our global community together.

Their work shines brightest during our Team Festivals – the moments when the entire SiteGround family comes together. Today, we’re taking you behind the scenes for an exclusive look at how it all comes together. Meet our Events Managers, who recently led our latest Team Retreat – a special event that unites 500+ SiteGrounders to share hobbies, learn new things, spark ideas, and truly connect.

From wild logistics to heartfelt teamwork, it’s clear that every event has its surprises. Here is what our events look like:

We sat down with them to learn what it really takes to shape SiteGround’s culture through events, and how their roles have evolved as the company has grown.

Q1: To set the stage, what’s something about your job that would surprise people?

Ramelina: I guess it would be the fact that I never get tired of my work. Every time I’m organizing an internal event, I’m genuinely excited to see my colleagues’ smiles. That excitement keeps me going—I’ve never felt exhausted, even when I’m holding flower scissors in my hand, removing vinyl from fences after only three hours of sleep. I truly love every minute of it.

Stanislava: The best thing about organizing events is that you never know what wild idea or unexpected task you’ll get involved in. For example, last year for our Team Festival, we had to find 30 huge water tanks to create a light installation, which led me to research where to rent water containers from! This year, we brought a giant floating SiteGround logo all the way to Greece and installed it in a pool. People are often surprised that all of these diverse projects are handled entirely in-house. And honestly, that’s one of the things I love most about being an Events Manager.

Q2: But beyond the behind-the-scenes hustle, how do these experiences actually shape SiteGround’s culture?

Ramelina: When you look at typical team-building photos or videos from different companies and then compare them to ours, you instantly see the difference. Our motto, “Never Bored. Never Boring.” isn’t just a marketing slogan, but a true reflection of who we are. Everything we create is by us, for us, driven by the creativity and enthusiasm of our colleagues across departments. That’s what makes our events so authentic and full of energy.

Stanislava: SiteGround’s annual Team Festival perfectly captures our team spirit. It brings together collaboration across many departments – Designers, Office managers, IT experts, Social media team and Creative teams, Accounting, Legal, and more. During the festival, it’s our own team members who lead the main workshops like 3D printing, electronics, handicrafts, sports activities, and many others. Despite everyone’s different day-to-day roles, we all become part of the ‘festival crew.’ This approach allows us to create something truly special, and everyone can feel it.

Q3: What’s one story from an event that perfectly captures the spirit of teamwork here?

Ramelina: One story? Impossible. There are dozens of them. However, the fact that we gather every year for a team photo, with all 500+ people coming together, and we’re still not bored from calling out “SiteGround” with broad smiles, speaks for itself.

Q4: How do you measure the success of an internal event?

Stanislava: There are many common event metrics like attendance rates, social media engagement, or post-event surveys. However, since events are inherently emotional, I prefer to focus on the energy that lingers afterward. What I see is people buzzing with excitement – sharing videos, photos, and stories.

And perhaps most importantly, our festivals often spark new friendships. This is especially important for new colleagues, who instantly feel included and connected. I know that from personal experience. When I joined SiteGround, it was just before a team event, and it helped me feel at home from the very start.

Q5: As SiteGround continues to grow, how have the challenges you face as an organizing team changed?

Ramelina: When there were fewer than a hundred people, it was easy to think about what everyone might enjoy. Now, with more than 500 colleagues, we have to focus on what will appeal to the majority, while still making sure each person feels included and seen. That’s a tough balance to strike. But because our events are created by us, for us, and always infused with positivity, the result is inevitably something special.

Stanislava: With such a large and diverse team, it’s impossible to match everyone’s taste in a single event, especially when it comes to the music lineup. But the beauty of SiteGround’s diversity is that it brings so many hidden talents together. So we turn the challenge of diversity into an advantage by including our own colleagues in the lineup. For example, our amazing rock band, made up entirely of SiteGround team members from Tech Support, AI Development, DevOps, and QA teams, rocks the stage every year. We even have DJ sets performed by one of our Product Owners! And one more from the Customer Care team!

Q6: What is the biggest value of investing in memorable internal events?

Ramelina: Truly great internal events are a refreshing boost to our work-life balance. That’s why our team-buildings include a bit of everything – opportunities to learn something new, connect with nature, sing and dance, show your talents, and share your favorite hobbies. You even forget about your smartphone entirely and just enjoy being present with your teammates in real life.

Stanislava: SiteGround events remind me, and hopefully everyone, just how amazing the people we work with every day really are. They’re one of the things that truly set us apart because we pour our hearts into them, just like we do when creating our products and services. In the end, it’s these moments together that genuinely restore my faith in community and humanity in general.

Happy SiteGround employees enjoying the team retreat in Greece

We’ll leave you with a glimpse of the fun: check out our party photo gallery! And here’s a final thought from Ramelina that perfectly captures how our events shape SiteGround’s culture: “Creating only for work doesn’t work for long. You have to play. It’s a voyage, not a destination.”

Expert Spotlight: How a Product Designer Shapes Experiences to Empower Real People?

Featured image of Daniela Borisova in SiteGround's "Spotlight Expert"

Have you ever opened a website or app and felt like everything just flows – every click leading naturally to the next, like a smooth sail on a Summer day? That seamless experience doesn’t just happen. The truth is there’s a team of people, all pulling the ropes with lots of thinking and testing behind the scenes, so that you feel that breeze of ease in every click.

In this edition of Expert Spotlights, we’re excited to introduce one of the people in charge of designing these experiences throughout – a talented Product Designer on our SaaS product team, Daniela Borisova. She is constantly helping real people around the world on their journey to launch their dream site and succeed online with ease.

Tell us a bit about what you are currently working on?

Currently, I’m working on SiteGround’s Website Builder, which aims to empower small business owners to launch their websites and grow their businesses. I love that we serve as the bridge between individuals who have the courage to launch their dream business and their customers, who will be the power that keeps it going. I’ve always believed that being a product designer is a very powerful and responsible position, as your solutions can have a direct impact on people’s dreams. It is so exciting!

Daniela working in SiteGround

What sparked your love for Product Design?

To be honest, I never imagined I’d become a Product Designer. I studied at the National Academy of Arts, aiming for a career in the arts field, but during my final year, I realized it no longer fulfilled my need for self-expression. That’s when I started exploring graphic design, but it was a weekly web design class in my last semester that changed everything. The incredible teacher introduced me to a world beyond visual design, showing me that web design involves much deeper and complex considerations.

One story she told stuck with me. It was about how she was designing for an Arabic brand, where the team had to deeply understand a culture so different from their own. This story about how product designers need to immerse themselves in others’ lives and cultures left me inspired and curious. Later on, after a friend’s encouragement, I completed a series of design courses, worked pro bono, and eventually, after many ups and downs, got my first UX design role five years ago.

How is working the job different from studying about it?

The reality of working as a product designer is quite different from the academic one. This is something I always talk about when mentoring aspiring product designers.

When we study product design, the cases are usually idealised, where companies have no boundaries in terms of time, budget, and legacy. It’s not impossible to design “by the books”, but the truth is, when you join a company, it already has an existing product, and it comes with its own challenges. Often, schedules are tight, and design depth is accumulated. We as designers need to learn how to navigate this dynamic and look at it as an opportunity to make decisions quickly and perform faster, smaller iterations.

Another misconception is that the research, design, and development process is streamlined and linear. In reality, it’s not always like that, and that’s OK. When I started as a Junior Designer, I also had this belief, and it took me some time to embrace the dynamic environment and create a process that works for me.

You mentioned mentoring, can you share a bit about that?

I’ve always felt the urge to share my knowledge with those who might benefit from it, yet an inner voice often whispered, “What if it’s not good enough?”.

Last year, I decided to challenge myself and accepted an invitation from one of the major Universities in my home country to deliver a lecture on contemporary art, choosing a topic of my interest. Speaking in front of students and educators, including PhDs and professors, was a transformative experience. The room was full, and I was pleasantly surprised by the audience’s keen interest. This led to an invitation to make it an annual event. Even right now I’m working on the next one I’m about to lead.

Overcoming my fear made me realize that people are eager to listen to my insights. I was also a guest lecturer at the university where I received my design education, conducting a seminar attended by almost 400 people!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from this series of events is to never underestimate your knowledge and to act regardless of your insecurities.

Speaking of lessons, which are the three qualities a successful Product Designer should have?

To me, the three most important qualities are:

  1. Be open to feedback and collaboration
  2. Be attentive and dive deep into the problems you are solving
  3. Be adaptive to changing environments.

I think that it’s fairly easy to learn a design tool or even coding with all the information we have nowadays, not to mention AI. But it’s not that easy to understand a complex problem with all its constraints or to accept that a design idea that you absolutely love might not always be the most appropriate for the business need. We need to be able to listen, leave our ego aside, and be open to anything. I deeply believe in being a good colleague and a person that others will love working with will take you a long way.

You mentioned AI, can you share whether you think AI has any place in Product Design?

AI is a powerful assistant that can boost productivity and creativity when brainstorming ideas, the initial research phase, and many other activities. But it can’t replace a real human in solving complex problems and taking many aspects and constraints into account. We should not forget that we are building products for people (until we start doing it for AI agents as well).

Daniela Borisova with her Design colleagues

Is there a go-to approach you rely on in your daily work?

I definitely believe in the “tried and trusted” processes. I always start my work by doing research on how other people solved similar problems to mine, because the existing solutions out there are what our users are using and are familiar with, have spent time with, and tend to search for similar solutions. It’s not me who claims that – it’s Jacob Nielsen (Jacob’s law).

In the design field, there is a very fine line between creating something that feels natural and innovation. Users don’t want to spend time navigating a steep learning curve for new products, so giving them already working patterns is helpful in making them feel confident.

How do you manage to stay creative and maintain your work/life balance?

The most important aspect of staying creative is bouncing ideas off my teammates. Everybody has different knowledge that can help you develop an idea and find the right solution.

As for work/life balance, it is very important for me to physically and mentally differentiate my personal space from my work space. Actually, my best office hack is to always “unwind” after work with a good workout. My advice is just move, regardless of the activity – you’ll feel great afterwards.

Daniela Borisova - Race For The Cure

And during the weekends, I try to disconnect by learning new things and researching contemporary artists, practicing different sports, and going on long walks. I often joke that if you forget what you’ve been working on before the weekend, then you really had a good rest.

Finally, what’s the next big thing in your field of work that you’re excited about?

I am excited about diving deeper into our portfolio of products, contributing my expertise, and making a positive impact. There are amazing things to come at SiteGround, and we are working passionately to make them happen, so stay tuned.

Thank You For An Incredible Year

At SiteGround, we take this hurdle off your hands because we believe every website deserves to benefit from the latest technologies for improved speed and security. We upgraded millions of websites to PHP 8.2 and MySQL 8—writing custom scripts, running extensive tests, and addressing any issues—all seamlessly and without disrupting your workflow.

SiteGround Wins Google Cloud DORA Award for Culture of Performance and Innovation

SiteGround Wins Google Cloud DORA Award

We’re thrilled to announce that SiteGround has been honored with the Google Cloud DORA Award for Nurturing Team Culture of Performance and Innovation. This recognition places us alongside global leaders like GitLab, Uber, Vodafone, Virgin Media O2, and more, acknowledged by the awards for their industry excellence throughout the years. The SiteGround Google Cloud DORA Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, highlighting our efforts to continuously improve our operations, work processes, technology, and infrastructure for the benefit of our clients.

Innovating DevOps for Performance and Growth

The Google Cloud DORA award recognizes organizations at the forefront of advancing DevOps through DORA research. Our award demonstrates how we implement effective DevOps processes that lead to a more productive work environment, better teamwork and efficiency, and deliver top-notch performance while ensuring our clients have the best possible experience.

What Does DORA Measure?

The DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) team developed the Four Keys project, which helps organizations like ours track important aspects of our software development. This allows us to see how well we’re doing and find ways to make our software delivery and teamwork even better, ultimately enhancing our clients’ experience with our services.

These four key metrics are:

  • Deployment frequency
  • Change fail rate
  • Failed deployment recovery time
  • Lead time for changes

For over a decade, DORA has validated these software delivery metrics as an effective way of measuring the outcomes of the software delivery process. Each year the DORA research team publishes a comprehensive Accelerate State of DevOps Report, collecting data through an annual, worldwide survey of professionals working in technical and adjacent roles.

This year nearly 3,000 working professionals from a variety of industries around the world participated in the survey to help form a better understanding of the factors that drive high-performing, technology-driven organizations. The DORA awards outline companies with exceptional results in the field, and SiteGround is proud to be recognized among the top-performing organizations with a DORA award!

SiteGround’s Performance on Key DevOps Metrics

According to DORA’s analysis of the state of DevOps across all 3,000 respondents in 2024, four clusters of companies emerged, based on their software-delivery performance: Elite, High, Medium, and Low.

Here is how SiteGround stacks up in each metric of our software delivery process today:

Deployment Frequency

This measures how often we update our software with new features or fixes. Frequent updates mean you’re always getting the latest improvements, product features, and fixes.

Our current deployment rate of 6 times per day places SiteGround in the Elite group of companies – under 19% of all surveyed respondents with multiple deployments per day according to the DORA report for 2024.

Change Failure Rate

This measures the percentage of updates that cause problems and need fixing. A lower rate means our updates are more reliable, giving you a smoother experience. Our change failure percentage of just 0.75% ranks us at the forefront in this category, with a 5% considered Elite performance.

Failed Deployment Recovery Time

If something goes wrong after a release or a change in production, this metric shows how quickly we can fix it and get everything back to normal. At SiteGround our failed deployment time is exceptional – only 8 minutes, with less than an hour considered Elite performance.

 Lead Time for Changes

This shows how quickly we can take a new idea or fix it and make it live for you to use. Faster times mean we’re responding quickly to your needs. According to the DORA report for 2024, our lead time of 8 days places us on the verge of the High performers group with up to one week lead time for a change.

Modernizing our DevOps to Empower Millions of Websites to Succeed

Our results and recognition in the Nurturing Culture of Performance and Innovation category are rooted in the synergy of our team-empowering work ethic, effective solution-building, and proactive approach to technology, which was unleashed to its full potential after we switched our bare metal to Google Cloud infrastructure. That transition opened up the resources to improve our software development cycle, our cross-team work efficiency and quality, and more effectively track and measure the results from this targeted effort.

Ultimately, this enabled us to rapidly expand our product portfolio, making us evolve from a leading web hosting provider into a comprehensive digital experience platform. We now offer cutting-edge products to empower clients to not only maintain high-performing websites but also build a more successful online presence – all under one roof.

What This Means for Our Clients?

Winning the Google Cloud DORA Award is not just an honor for us, but a commitment to our clients. Here’s how our focus on the DORA principles benefits SiteGround’s clients:

Winning the Google Cloud DORA Award underscores our technical excellence and our commitment to nurturing a company culture of performance and innovation for the benefit of our clients and our industry as a whole.

SiteGround-supported Antarctic Rowing Expedition wins 8 Guinness Records (+ A Petition to Protect the Southern Ocean)

SiteGround-supported Antarctic expedition

Last December, while everyone was in the whirlwind of the end-of-year Holidays, among the SiteGround team there was a different excitement in the air. We had just announced our support for the World’s first human-powered rowing expedition from the Antarctic – and our whole team was anticipating the start of the adventure, planned for January 2023.

Fast forward to a little over a month later, the mission was successfully completed with extraordinary success and 8 Guinness records! As one of their main sponsors, at SiteGround we are extremely proud with the accomplishment of the crew, but even more so with their cause – the petition to help prevent the overexploitation of the once pristine marine environment of the Southern Ocean.

Our support for entrepreneurial spirit and a stand for the Planet

It all started in November 2022, when we decided to hold an inspiring internal event for the SiteGround team in our HQ office. We had invited Bulgarian entrepreneur and adventurer Stefan Ivanov, who already had 2 Guinness Records with his son Maxim, awarded for their astounding journey, called NEVEREST. For NEVEREST his son and himself spent 105 Days across the Atlantic in the hurricane season in a rowing boat they built themselves in their garage at home.

During the meeting with the team, Stefan revealed that he was about to become part of another expedition with even bigger stakes and cause – to help protect the environment of Antarctica. The upcoming mission resonated deeply with the inherent values of the SiteGround team – to challenge yourself, raise the limit of what’s possible, and live with purpose. But it also highlighted our need to care and take action for our planet and our personal and collective responsibility for its protection. In the words of our co-founder, Ivo Tzenov, “The courage to keep doing what you believe in, despite that everyone tells you it’s impossible, is no stranger to us. It’s exactly what’s been driving our work and success at SiteGround from the start. But the mission had our support also because of their cause and stand for the environment, which is also something that we at SiteGround firmly believe in”. So it was only natural that we decided to support this endeavor.

The Shackleton Mission 2023

The crew of the Shackleton Mission included 6 leading explorers and adventurers from 5 countries – Captain Fiann Paul (Iceland), Lisa Farthofer (Austria), Jamie Douglas-Hamilton (United Kingdom), Brian Krauskopf (USA), Mike Matson (USA), and our home-country representative Stefan Ivanov (Bulgaria). The expedition departed across the Southern Ocean from the Antarctic King George Island to South Georgia Island aboard their boat, Mrs Chippy, on January 11, 2023. Their 850 nautical mile journey passed across what is regarded by many as “the most dreaded bit of ocean on the planet”. It retraces the voyage made by Sir Ernest Shackleton and 5 of his crew in 1916 that saved the lives of all 28 members of Shackleton’s previous Endurance expedition.

The 2023 Shackleton Mission was conducted under the flag of “THE EXPLORERS CLUB”. Established in New York in 1904, the club has been supporting scientific expeditions of various disciplines and uniting its members in the bonds of good fellowship. It’s the same club, whose flag graced the first expeditions to the South and the North Poles, mount Everest, and even the Moon!

The whole SiteGround team followed the Antarctic mission’s journey closely thanks to the online diary of the Bulgarian representative in the crew, who even managed to post regular updates along the way! On January 17, 2023, the mission was completed and the team landed safely on Laurie Island (South Orkney Islands) after rowing 777 km (420 nautical miles) in the Southern Ocean in 6 days. The row meets all requirements of the Ocean Rowing Society and qualifies as a successfully completed polar ocean row and won 8 Guinness Records:

🏆 First human-powered expedition from the Antarctic

🏆 First human-powered expedition on the Southern Ocean South to North

🏆 First human-powered expedition on the Scotia Sea

🏆 The first human-powered expedition completed entirely within the Southern Ocean

🏆 Southernmost start of a rowing expedition

🏆 Fastest row on the Southern Ocean

🏆 Longest distance rowed on the Southern Ocean

🏆 Fastest Polar row

A small row boat, a giant leap for the Planet

The crew of the Shackleton Mission were aiming to challenge what’s humanly possible, but their mission went beyond that. It is true evidence that with the right team, the right partner, and support, we can accomplish anything.

That’s also true for the mission’s even greater goal – to prevent the overexploitation of the once pristine marine environment of Antarctica. The petition started by the crew calls for the designation of new marine protected areas of at least 4,000,000 km2 in the Southern Ocean – the largest marine protection in history. Given that over 90% of the large marine species in the oceans are already in danger of extinction, with your help we can stop this.

Starting 2022 with 98% Client Satisfaction Rate

Client survey results 2021

At the end of every year, we turn to our clients for the most important mark that really matters – how you rate our efforts and services throughout the year in our traditional client satisfaction survey. Each year we are amazed and humbled by the positive feedback we receive, and every time we manage to raise the bar a tad higher. In 2021, the result is a stellar 98% overall client satisfaction rating, which is spectacular in any type of client service business, but especially so in the website hosting industry.

Of course it’s hard to put a number to satisfaction, but it’s a pointer that takes into account your ratings of the main pillars of our web hosting services – website speed, security and support, which we keep strengthening and improving on year after year. Here is a breakdown of some of the things we did in these key directions and the impact that they had on your websites, leading up to such staggering satisfaction numbers in all aspects of our service.

97.7% Client Satisfaction with Website Speed

We’ve always been famous for proactively adopting the latest web speed technologies for the benefit of our clients. In 2021 we again introduced multiple new website performance enhancements at no extra cost. We started off by enabling Google’s state-of-the art Brotli image compression algorithm on our servers, ensuring between 15% to 20% website speed gains for clients right out of the box. To add to that, our new MySQL setup allowed websites hosted with us to serve more visitors simultaneously, lowering the number of slow website queries between 10x to 20x times. And by enabling our unique Dynamic caching by default on all hosting plans, clients now enjoy up to 5x times faster page loading time. These are just some of the latest and major improvements we introduced to make your websites run faster, improve your website’s user experience, conversions, and SEO rankings. In return you rated our website speed efforts with the highest marks in the history of our end-of-year client survey – a stellar 97.7% Website Speed Satisfaction Rate!

98.5% Client Satisfaction with Website Security

Parallel to our website speed improvements, we’re always working on new ways to help you with the never-ending quest of securing your website. Our mission to provide the best data protection took another big step this year with the launch of our off-site backups. Apart from our free daily backups and easy restore, we deployed a geo-redundant backup system which minimizes the risk of data loss in case a whole data center facility is in jeopardy for whatever reason. That way we ensure a safe recovery of your site with minimum downtime. In addition to that, our SiteGround Site Scanner security service got improved to include a new scanning method that allows users to run a thorough file scan of their site directly on the host server with a single click. And we also introduced our new centralized DNS for faster, safer, and easier hosting.

4.3/5 Stars for our Client Tools and Services

This year was especially rich in new website tools and services for our WordPress users. We launched the SiteGround Security plugin for WordPress – a free tool that greatly improves WordPress security in just a few clicks. And it’s available for everyone, not just SiteGround clients. Just a few months after its release, the plugin was awarded Silver for Best WordPress Security Plugin in the biggest WordPress community award, Monster’s Award. And to round off our list with added-valued services and tools, we released a new version of our SiteGround Optimizer WordPress plugin to upgrade its functionality and add new features for even more site speed and convenience for webmasters. All of these efforts did not go unnoticed, and we got an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars for each of our latest tool releases.

  • SiteGround Optimizer WP plugin → 4.3/5 rating
  • SiteGround WP Security plugin → 4.3/5 rating
  • SiteGround Site Scanner → 4.4/5 rating
  • The New Central DNS → 4.3/5 rating

A Look Back and a Look Ahead

We’ve been doing our client end-of-year survey for 10 years now, the first one dating back to 2012. A decade later, with over 2,800,000 hosted domains, your feedback ratings still manage to go up – starting from 95% overall client satisfaction, up to а steady 98% in the last couple of years.

We are thankful for your feedback and for helping us improve our services year after year. In 2022 we will continue to improve our tools and services and launch new ones for existing and potential clients alike, and hopefully manage to further exceed your expectations yet again.

Green Web Hosting And SiteGround’s Commitment To Sustainability

Data centers play a big role in the Internet industry: they store, process and deliver all the websites’ information on their non-stop running servers. They are usually part of massive facilities which need a controlled and artificially-cooled environment to run properly. That requires a huge amount of energy, indeed, according to recent studies, global data centers are estimated to consume 1% of global electricity use, issuing high quantities of CO2.

As an international hosting provider that manages more than 2 Million domains and 5PB of data, we are fully aware of this impact on the environment and it is in our hands to actively mitigate it by committing to provide green web hosting services as much as possible. From designing our hosting operations and services with the highest efficiency in mind, to implementing several policies that support an environmentally-friendly mindset, we take it seriously because we truly care.

Since today is Earth Day and we want to celebrate that day with joy and gratitude, it seemed relevant to give you some background on what it means to be a green web hosting provider, what to keep in mind when choosing one, and what actions SiteGround is taking towards sustainability.

What is green web hosting and how hosting providers can mitigate their environmental impact?

Green web hosting means that the hosting provider is committed to contribute towards the health of the environment and proactively takes eco-friendly actions that involve either carbon offsetting or renewable energy usage in order to reduce or mitigate the environmental impact of their servers’ energy consumption.

There are two main actions a hosting provider can take on the way to offering green hosting service:

  1. Use renewable energy to power up their data centers and facilities. This means that the electricity they use comes from natural resources that are replenished naturally, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat.
  2. Buy carbon credits. With this option, the company can buy a permit to emit one ton of carbon dioxide per credit or its equivalent of any other greenhouse gas with the aim to offset their carbon footprint.

As the internet industry evolves, so does the amount of energy and resources needed to process all the operations that the content storage and traffic implies. Choosing a hosting provider which is actively running actions towards better efficiency of their data centers and fostering initiatives to reduce their business environmental footprint is becoming ever so important, as it all makes a great impact on climate change, in addition to having several advantages for you. Three of the main ones are:

  • Carbon footprint reduction of your e-business and online operations, since green hosting providers usually opt for renewable energy usage or buy carbon credits.
  • Better efficiency of your website, as their efforts towards sustainability may include the adoption of latest technologies and resources optimization.
  • Easiness to be part of the green change, as at the very moment you host your website with a hosting committed to the environment, you are already making a difference compared to others in regards to climate change.

Actions SiteGround is taking as a green web hosting provider:

Reducing our carbon footprint by partnering with commited providers

Since we are not a data center provider, and are not operating our own data center facilities, we need to rely on the green policies of our main data center partners. That’s why, a key motivating factor for our decision to move our infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform was their commitment to sustainability. Google’s data centers match 100% of the energy consumed by their global operations with renewable energy and maintain a commitment to carbon neutrality. Choosing such a leader in energy efficiency as our infrastructure partner is something that we are very proud of.

Optimizing resources by providing customers with top-notch technologies for better efficiency of your website applications

Efficiency is another key factor of green web hosting. Simply put, every website operation is managed and executed by its hosting server processor, and requires CPU, RAM, and storage resources. The heavier your website is, the longer its server processor and resources are in use, the more electricity it consumes.

At SiteGround, we are constantly optimizing our server software to get the most out of our technology and reduce the resource usage of our clients’ websites. As a result, the better optimized our servers are, the less resources and less energy your website will use for the same volume of tasks, making our operations and clients’ websites “greener” thanks to our software performance. For example, our Ultrafast PHP can speed up website performance up to 30%, making it consume proportionally less energy. Our latest RAM optimization of our cloud MySQL setup on our servers additionally increases client websites’ resource usage efficiency.

We also constantly look for ways to optimize our internal operations for maximum efficiency – for example, performing regular backups at certain hours when the overall server resources usage is relatively low, to avoid putting extra load on the server processors, thus balancing energy consumption. Overall, our policy to always strive to make the latest website technologies available for our clients to use not only helps you reach top website performance, but promotes energy efficiency, as well.

Reducing the environmental impact of our workplace

In early 2019 we finished the building project of the new SiteGround Headquarters building. One of our main goals was for it to be built entirely in accordance with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) requirements. LEED is the most widely used green building certification in the world, globally recognized as a symbol of sustainability achievement.

SiteGround Headquarters Building is built entirely in accordance with the LEED requirements.

Encouraging a more conscious lifestyle among our team members

In addition to our efforts on a business and company level to become a green web hosting provider, we constantly try to maximize our impact by encouraging every single employee of SiteGround to lead a more conscious lifestyle. We are running several internal initiatives to help us do that:

  • Company E-cars, e-bikes and free e-charging stations at the disposal of our employees during work hours or for running small errands. Following this benefit, we saw more colleagues opting for electric cars in their own households and others seriously considering it!;
Company E-cars are at the disposal of our employees during work hours.
  • No plastic water bottles, containers, or water coolers in the office: we installed water filter dispensers across all our offices to replace plastic use due to daily water consumption;
  • Using custom green-friendly tissue for our company gifts: For all SiteGround-branded gifts and packages that we send to employees and partners, we use a custom-design eco-packaging by Noissue’s Eco-Packaging Alliance. For every order made they plant a new tree, contributing to global reforestation and carbon neutrality;
  • Our last (for now) team building event in 2019 was dedicated entirely to the Zero-waste idea, which was reflected not only in all team workshops and activities, but across the whole event organisation, banning single-use plastics, separating and recycling all our waste from the event, etc.

Having in mind all of the above, we are fully aware that sustainability is a process – it starts with an intention and only goes on and improves with time. We will continue looking into adding even more meaningful actions to continue delivering green web hosting features. But the future depends on all of us. We all need to realize that our personal choices have public consequences, and be more conscious about what we can do in order to sustain our business or way of life, but in a way that is also considerate for the environment.

In addition to us sharing our efforts towards sustainability, we’d love to hear from you! Share in the comments below what you are individually doing to achieve a greener way of living, working, and doing business. It is always comforting to know every single step that is done at every level, as when put all together, they will sum up to turn into a big leap towards mitigating environmental issues.

We Are Turning 17 And This Is How We Have Matured

SiteGround_17_Birthday

Turning 17 is exciting for everyone, even for a hosting provider! And today, March 22, 2021 marks our 17th Birthday! During these years we managed to keep our enthusiasm and spirits just as high as that of a high school senior, but gain even more experience. In this past year alone we matured tremendously, having been through a lot of changes and facing challenging times that made us stronger and better than ever before, especially in terms of our service and commitment to our communities and those who were in need during the COVID-19 crisis. What helps us celebrate and enjoy this anniversary is knowing that we have done a lot of good work and we want to invite you to join us on a short walk down memory lane.

Enhancing our interfaces for a smooth user experience

Looking back at our beginnings, it is quite impressive how our increasing focus on delivering a top-notch user experience has been reflected in our interfaces. Those days in which website platform, dashboard or control panel were a synonym for complicated routes to follow only suitable for the most technical ones are gone.

SiteGround User Area from 2012 to 2019

Now with our renewed User Area and Site Tools interfaces, which are already available for ALL clients on our shared hosting servers and almost all of our Cloud ones, the experience of managing a website has become easier than ever and accessible to all.

SiteGround User Area from 2019 onwards

Developing the fanciest, high-quality hosting platform

Our platform has evolved tremendously since when we started back in 2004. Moving from bare metal servers with a pretty standard LAMP setup (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) with cPanel (a control panel used by pretty much every other host out there) to a sophisticated cutting-edge platform with in-house developed technologies and a unique control panel is our pride and joy.  Our clients now enjoy one of the fastest and safest hosting services thanks to a unique configuration built over the years by some of the best IT experts. To remind you about a few of the more recent ones:

  • Unique Ultrafast PHP configuration for up to 30% faster sites;
  • Custom MySQL setup to reduce the number of slow queries on our servers;
  • Nginx Direct Delivery for caching of static resources like images and CSS and dynamic caching mechanism now available to all clients for up to 5 times faster sites;
  • The one and only SiteGround Optimizer plugin that allows users to enable tons of performance boosting features on their WordPress sites;
  • An ultrafast Daily Backup System that saves hours in data recovery;
  • AI antibot system to prevent the most obnoxious brute force attacks;
  • Infrastructure powered by Google Cloud that helps us be even more stable, faster and greener, and more…

Maturing as a socially responsible company

Part of growing up means maturing in many different ways. One of the aspects that we are much proud of is how we evolved with regard to our corporate social responsibility. Although we don’t often put our good deeds in writing, nor do we have a corporate page officializing these responsibilities (yet),  we care and we get involved.

The COVID crisis hit all of us hard both personally and professionally. In a moment when so many people were in need and such a large number of businesses had the urgency to go online, we put all our efforts to help as much as we could with our #StaySafeBeKind initiative, giving free renewals to clients and free accounts to local heroes, donating more than 350,000 EUR to hospitals, and more.

  • Thinking about the environment and creating awareness

Our increasing concern about the environment is like a red light that moves us to sponsor, support and organize various green projects – Zero-waste team building in 2019 (the last one we had unfortunately), partnering with Google Cloud and the importance of their carbon-neutrality program in our decision, building a green headquarters building, buying electric cars for our corporate needs, and more! We act whenever we can because we care.

  • Supporting open source communities

OK, let’s not forget about the open source. Ever since the beginning, we have been involved with various open source communities – Mambo, Joomla, WordPress being the forerunners. We believe in the open source software because it lowers entry barriers and makes technology more accessible and we support it by sponsoring conferences, building solutions for the communities and more.

Keeping high client satisfaction rate across the years

There are many things that have changed along our journey, but one has remained unchanged over the years – the high client satisfaction rate

Our commitment to deliver the best service and experience has been strong since our beginnings, and we assure you that it will endure for many more to come.

Time for sharing…

Now that we have shared ours, let’s see what you have got down your SiteGround memory lane 😉. We invite you to comment under this post and tell us some of your best moments with SiteGround. A good story always melts our hearts and help us make this day special!

Last, but not least, we would like to thank all of You for choosing SiteGround as your hosting provider. We couldn’t have made it without you and we hope you join us on this exciting ride to our next anniversary.

How our Team Festival Embodies our Values

At SiteGround, some people work from our offices, some from home, and some alternate between the two. We are a remote-friendly, but not entirely distributed team. It’s one of the things that makes us interesting.

Our team of 500+ employees is scattered in four office locations and around the world. We usually communicate on Slack, Hangouts, and Zoom, but once a year, we try to get everyone together for our two-day SiteGround Team Festival. It’s our special way of creating bonds that last long after the event is over, and directly contribute to making us a better, stronger, and more productive team.

Like the two previous editions, our 3rd SiteGround Team Festival celebrated the things that unite us. Our company culture has always been influenced by the same core values ever since we started in 2004.

They continue to be the invisible thread keeping our team closer, however spread-out it might be. Some of these values are craftsmanship, care, empathy, mutual support, and having fun along the way. Our team lives by these values, but we work by them too. We’re building services that we believe in, improving how our clients experience making and growing their websites. We know there is real value in sharing skills and knowhow, doing what you love, and being happy at work. And this all starts with our own people.
