Nat Miletic, Web Dev, WordPress, SEO, Agency Growth, points out that it\u2019s \u201ceven more important when it comes to eCommerce because how long the checkout process takes, directly impacts sales, sign-ups, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-track-your-website-performance\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-to-track-your-website-performance\"><\/span>How to track your website performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the fact that your website speed is so important for your small business, you&#8217;re probably wondering how to figure out how your site is performing. Here are a few free tools you can use, recommended by our experts: GTMetrix, Google PageSpeed Insights, webpagetest.org, or SEO tools, such as ahrefs and SEMrush, which also test for speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor simple tests, I like to use GTMetrix \u2013 it gives you a good overview, it\u2019s free to use, they even have bookmarks, so you go to a page, you click it, and it\u2019ll automatically generate a report,\u201d suggests Arnout Hellemans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re using Google Chrome, \u201cyou can basically right click and Inspect element \u2013 you get a console and go to the Performance tab, do a Lighthouse test, which will test the whole page. Half a year ago, they introduced Performance Insights that will show you which elements on the site are influencing the core web vitals scores,\u201d adds Arnout Hellemans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/newblog.siteground.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/img1-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16945\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you decide to use the Chrome development tools to run performance tests, beware that \u201cit will show you localized performance tests. Choose a good hosting provider&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still at the very beginning \u2013 in the process of starting a website, begin by picking a good hosting provider: \u201cFrom my experience, I think one of the main things to worry about is the hosting and what is going on in the background. Pick a fast and efficient theme (if you\u2019re using WordPress)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siteground.com\/kb\/make-wordpress-website\">building a website<\/a>, \u201cif you\u2019re using WordPress, pick a fast and efficient theme, because it will make all the difference and go a long way in terms of website performance,\u201d notes Nat Miletic. He points out that there are a lot of free themes that you can use, such as Astra, GeneratePress, and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-apply-caching-mechanisms\">3. Apply caching mechanisms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy personal preference for free or inexpensive tools \u2013 caching is a must, especially for WordPress sites [&#8230;] It creates static pages on the server that are quicker to come up on a user\u2019s browser,\u201d explains Nat Miletic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Arnout Hellemans warns that \u201cwhen you refresh pages, make sure you purge the cache, because otherwise, people will still see the older version \u2013 if you remove a link, it will still be there\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is more, there are different types of caching, which can be quite complicated, especially for small business owners. Minify JavaScript and CSS files<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive JavaScript and CSS also slow down your website by adding a lot of code to the weight of your site. To speed up your website, you need to minify JavaScript and CSS files, which removes all unnecessary characters from them. For this purpose, you can use a free plugin, such as the SiteGround Optimizer plugin for WordPress websites, which will do all that for you, no matter where your site is hosted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-optimize-fonts\">7. You\u2019re making round trips to their servers in order to download fonts and it\u2019s not very efficient.
